Suu Kyi?s release from house arrest said to be imminent (The Starting Point)

In other news

Leaders of 20 major economies refused to endorse a U.S. push to get China to let its currency rise, The AP reported. Instead, the world's rich and developing nations issued a statement that said they agreed to refrain from "competitive devaluation" of currencies. The U.S. claims Beijing is artificially keeping the yuan weak in order to gain a trade advantage. That argument was undercut by the U.S. decision to print more money in order to boost the economy, thus weakening the dollar.

Nissan is recalling more than 600,000 vehicles in North and South America and Africa due to steering and battery cable issues, The AP reported. The Japanese automaker said a corrosion problem with the lower steering column joint and shaft on Frontier pickup trucks and Xterra sport utility vehicles could limit steering movement or cause the joint to crack. Nissan Sentra sedans must also return for service to fix a battery cable terminal connector problem that can make the cars difficult to start or stall at low speeds.

Over 1 million people in China have been hit by a new cell phone virus since September, The Christian Science Monitor reported. The "zombie virus," which was built into a fake anti-virus application that users downloaded, sends the phone users' information and contact list to hackers. The hackers then send a non-stop stream of text messages to those contacts, which can cost affected users thousands of dollars a day.

Looking ahead

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will speak at a memorial service for the victims of American Airlines Flight 587. The plane crashed on Nov. 12, 2001 in Queens shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport, killing 265 people.

A federal judge in Knoxville, Tenn., will sentence David Kernell, who was arrested in 2008 for hacking former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's e-mail account. Prosecutors are seeking an 18-month prison term; Kernell's lawyer wants his client to receive probation.

The U.S. Marshals Services plans to auction personal property assets that were confiscated from disgraced financier Bernie Madoff. On Nov. 13, more than 400 items will be on the block, including a 10.54 carat diamond ring, a Steinway piano and 18 pairs of mens shoes (size 9W). All proceeds from the auction will go to the victims of Madoff's multi-billion dollar scam.

Video of the day

Quote of the day

"When we hate our enemies, we are giving them power over us: power over our sleep, our appetites, our blood pressure, our health and our happiness. Our enemies would dance with joy if only they knew how they were worrying us, lacerating us, and getting even with us! Our hate is not hurting them at all, but our hate is turning our days and nights into a hellish turmoil." --Dale Carnegie
